A backup only counts once the restore has worked.

Security · 3 min read · Our team

Almost every business has a backup. Far fewer have ever tried whether they can really get everything back from it. Yet that is what decides things in an emergency.

The 3-2-1 rule

A proven rule of thumb: three copies of your data, on two different types of storage, one of them off site.

Three questions for your IT

  1. When was a restore last tested, and did it work?
  2. How long would it take before your business could work again after a total failure?
  3. Could an attacker who gets into your network also delete or encrypt the backups?

If you can't answer one of these, that is a good reason to talk. The easiest start is a small test: bring back a single file, and then a whole server, from the backup.
