The printer won't print. What to check before you call.

Everyday IT · 3 min read · Our team

A printer on strike can hold up a whole morning. Many causes are simple, and you can rule them out yourself in a few minutes.

One step at a time

  1. Read the display on the printer. A paper jam, an empty cartridge or an open cover usually shows there.
  2. Turn it off and on. Switch it off completely, wait 30 seconds and switch it on again. This clears a surprising number of hangs.
  3. Clear the print queue. One stuck job can block all the others. Delete it in the printer settings on your PC.
  4. Choose the right printer. After updates, an old or wrong printer is sometimes set as the default in the print dialog.
  5. Check the network. Does it fail for your colleagues too? Then the cause is more likely the printer or the network than your PC. Check the network cable or the Wi-Fi indicator.

When to call us

If the problem keeps coming back, it is rarely just the printer. Then it is worth looking at drivers, network and print server together. We are happy to take that off your hands.
